On Sunday 5th March Mike Rhodes and Tony Johnston represented the club in the regional finals at The Tickled Trout Conference Centre, Preston.
Mike was in the Topics competition where he had to speak for 3 minutes, without preparation, on the word ‘Strike.’
I’m his inimitable style Mike gave a very charismatic, forceful and humorous speech. He was runner up, with the other representative from our area , who Mike had beaten in the Area competition, just pipping him from victory.
In the afternoon Tony was in the speech final. His speech was on ‘What’s in a name?’ where he referenced a wide range of cultural figures, from movies, music, YouTube influences, politicians and business to emphasise his point that names are extremely influential. He gave a well received speech but just lost out to Diana Douglas, coming runner up. If Tony had won South Penine area would have had a clean sweep of the Trophies on offer.
Both men proved that the standard is very high at Stockport Speakers Club. Well done!
