Programme 2023-2024

Our regular club meetings are every other Wednesday evening, starting at 8:00 pm, and usually finishing about 10 pm. The dates are given below.

A typical evening starts with a short business session, followed by three prepared speeches. Each of the speeches are evaluated before a short break. After we return, everybody gets the opportunity to do a short topic which is also evaluated. Finally, additional feedback is delivered by the General Evaluator, before the meeting is closed.

The programme includes a range of special events. We have a number of speaking competitions, most of which are open to all members. Our social events are sometimes shared with other speakers clubs, and range from formal dinners to garden parties. We always welcome spouses, friends and guests to special events, competitions and social gatherings.

As a member club of the Association of Speakers Clubs, we also take part in competitions and conferences up to national level. Dates and details will appear in this website.

Special Events

The Stockport Bowl — We host the North West’s premier inter-club speech competition, so please be there to support our contestant and hear some fine speeches. Guests, spouses, supporters and visitors are very welcome to attend. Details HERE

The ASC South Pennine Area Conference — Hosted at the Northenden Golf Club. This is always a friendly conference day with some hotly contested competitions and an insight into the workings of the ASC, too!

20 December 2023 Raconteurs Competition — Who can tell the most entertaining (or moving) story in just five minutes?

Spring 2024 Western District Conference — A day of ASC business and tough competitions. The winners will be going on to the National Finals.

Spring 2024 Topics and Evaluation Contests — Club members compete in impromptu speaking and also in evaluating speeches. The winners will represent the club at the South Pennine Area Competition later this year. Guests, spouses, supporters and visitors are very welcome to attend.

Spring 2024 The Club Speech Competition — Members strive to deliver the best prepared speech. The winner will represent the club at the South Pennine Area Competition, and will be the holder of our new Founders’ Trophy. Guests, spouses, supporters and visitors are very welcome to attend.

Spring 2024 National Conference — A day of National ASC business and the winners of the District competitions strut their stuff here in the National Finals.

22 May 2024 Annual General Meeting — Stockport Speakers Club members discuss the year that is past, hear their committee reports, and plan the next year. Our new Club President takes office.

June 2024 Charter Dinner — Guests and spouses are very welcome to attend as we celebrate another year in the life of the club.

July 2024 The Annual Garden Party — A delightful, traditional, family day with lovely food, stalls, and socialising. Children and guests are always welcomed. A joint event between Stockport Speakers Club and Stockport Ladies Speakers Club.

Members of Stockport Speakers Club are encouraged to visit other Clubs, especially our fellow clubs in the South Pennine Area of the Association of Speakers Clubs. As well as learning how other clubs are run, this is a great opportunity (if you like) to experience giving a speech to a new audience.

Most clubs have guest nights and social events where visitors are welcomed, and some have open competitions which we can enter. Details of all the visiting opportunities are announced at our meetings. Please don’t just “turn up”; tell our President and he will give you the contact phone number. Because these are people’s home phone numbers, we will not publish them here.
